Some cinemas who participated in the survey indicated that it is difficult to arrange the screening rights for online screenings. In this case, it is advisable to engage with film distributors and work on – and communicate about – the security of online content. Consider DRM security to prevent copying and downloading.
Film exhibitors cite both a lack of financial resources and a lack of technical support as a barrier to getting started with virtual cinema. If so, seek collaboration with other creators and leverage existing resources and departments. Setting up a new programme or marketing department for online is not necessary.
Make use of the knowledge that knowledge and umbrella organizations have, such as DEN.
Make use of existing tools and seek collaboration. In corona times, for example, Medialoc set up the MediaContainer. This is a tool to offer visitors a seamless digital experience, with the possibility for interaction with and among the audience. The Container was developed in close cooperation with IDFA, NFF, IFFR and Cinekid, which still use the tool to this day.
If there is too little (technical) knowledge, time or money to set up your own platform, consider joining existing platforms for virtual cinema. See also the theme ‘platform‘.
